Our beautiful climate allows us to spend lots of time out-of-doors. That’s one of the reasons the outdoor area has become one of the most important areas of the modern home.
Traditionally, most of the living went on inside with an occasional bbq outside. Today, our homes have become the place where we can enjoy a relaxing lifestyle and take a break from our busy lives and a lot of that happens outside!
Whether you are building a new home, renovating an older one, or just wanting to vamp up your existing outdoor area, here’s five tips to get you started.
1. Create a focal point
To fashion a stunning outdoor area, create a focal point with artwork, water feature or interesting plants, and position your outdoor furniture around it.
2. Add a grand entrance
Think about adding a touch of drama with an entrance statement. You might choose a beautiful gate or door, or a plant-covered arch. Entering your outdoor area through a beautiful entranceway will make your outdoor area feel especially welcoming.
3. Choose a theme
Choose a style you like and theme your outdoor area around that style. Make sure your decor is cohesive along with your colour palette. This will enhance the element of relaxation.
You can even theme your garden to match. For example, if you are choosing a minimalist theme, you might add bamboo and pebble gardens. If you are choosing a Mediterranean feel, you could add lots of terracotta pots, garden urns, Roman statues and plenty of greenery.
4. Bring on the comforts
Your outdoor space should be as inviting and comfortable as indoors and should be an extension of your living area. Add all things comfortable – rugs, cushions, pillows, poufs, comfy chairs, candles, lamps, coloured throws – to make your outdoor area a place the whole family will love to be. Outdoor spaces can simply be an extension of indoors.
Lighting adds mood and also makes your outdoor area functional for night-time enjoyment. Think about adding LED lighting around the garden to draw attention to beautiful trees or plants. Strings of lights can look really elegant too.
We’d love to hear what you have done to make your outdoor area more liveable.
